Tras conocer la noticia que difunden los medios este fin de semana, respecto a un caso de asalto y violación a una peregrina venezolana de unos 50 años, me he preguntado y preocupado por el hecho de que siempre he dicho que es seguro andar sola y no hay que preocuparse por el hecho de hacerlo de esta forma, sola. Pero desde la desaparición de Denis, el caso de la joven Norteamericana que falleció trágicamente en manos de un asesino que ya ha sido detenido, juzgado y condenado a más de 20 años de prisión, procuro salir del Hotel y andar junto a otros peregrinos. El Camino Francés, de inicio a fin, está muy concurrido en cualquier época del año y masificado los meses de mejor clima, como son Mayo hasta Septiembre. Estos casi 800 km que hay de camino hasta Santiago de Compostela, bien señalizados y separados en gran parte de otros caminos, carreteras o vías secundarias, suelen ser seguros. Nunca se está seguro en ningún sitio, en realidad, pero la concurrencia de peregrinos, las señalizaciones amarillas oficiales que hallamos en los cruces y a cada kilómetro, una vez adentrados en senderos específicos para el peregrinaje de población a población, garantizan esta seguridad a la que me refiero. Como medida de precaución, además es conveniente no distanciarse NUNCA de otros peregrinos con los que sueles encontrarte a lo largo del día. Allí donde paras a tomar algo, o para ir al baño o para descansar, hay que procurar hacerse ver y saludar, como hacen todos, desando «buen camino» a todo el que se acerque. El hecho de ir sola, en mi caso, nunca me ha dado inseguridad en los años que llevo peregrinando.

After knowing the news spread by the media this weekend, regarding a case of assault and rape of a Venezuelan pilgrim of about 50 years, I have asked myself and worried about the fact that I have always said that it is safe to walk alone and not you have to worry about doing it this way, alone. But since the disappearance of Denis, the case of the young American who died tragically in the hands of a murderer who has already been arrested, tried and sentenced to more than 20 years in prison, I try to leave the hotel and walk with other pilgrims. The French Way, from start to finish, is very busy at any time of the year and crowded the months of better weather, such as May to September. These almost 800 km on the way to Santiago de Compostela, well marked and separated in large part from other roads, roads or secondary roads, are usually safe. You can never be sure of any place, in reality, but the concurrence of pilgrims, the official yellow signs that we find at the crossings and every kilometer, once entered into specific paths for the pilgrimage from population to population, guarantee this security to which I mean. As a precautionary measure, it is also advisable not to distance yourself from other pilgrims that you usually encounter throughout the day. There where you stop to take something, or to go to the bathroom or to rest, you have to try to make yourself look and say hello, as everyone does, desiring «good path» to everyone who approaches. The fact of going alone, in my case, has never given me insecurity in the years I’ve been on pilgrimage.

Por otra parte, la familia y amistades que siguen mis peregrinajes a diario saben exactamente la etapa que me toca hacer cada día, medida que adopté desde el trágico suceso de Denis. No está de más enviar a lo largo del día un whatsapp a algún familiar o amigo indicando la ubicación. Considero que son pequeñas cosas necesarias para sentirte protegida en caso de necesidad. Podría decir que innecesarias ya que no hay peligro alguno pero, como ya he razonado anteriormente, no estamos seguros en ningún sitio.

On the other hand, the family and friends who follow my pilgrimages every day know exactly the stage that I have to do every day, as I have adopted since the tragic event of Denis. It does not hurt to send a whatsapp to a relative or friend throughout the day indicating the location. I think they are small things necessary to feel protected in case of need. I could say that unnecessary since there is no danger but, as I have argued above, we are not sure anywhere.

Este último consejo, en cuanto a enviar la ubicación lo llevo haciendo algún tiempo cuando salgo a caminar por los alrededores de la población donde vivo porque también soy consciente de que puedo sufrir un accidente, una caída u otro hecho que precise de ayuda y de esta forma me tienen más o menos localizada. Por lo tanto, no es algo necesario exclusivamente para peregrinar por el Camino de Santiago, sino que es extensible para cualquier otra ocasión en la que debas andar sola/o.

This last advice, as for sending the location, I have been doing it for some time when I walk around the town where I live because I am also aware that I can suffer an accident, a fall or other event that needs help and this I have more or less localized form. Therefore, it is not something necessary exclusively for pilgrimage on the Camino de Santiago, but it is extendable for any other occasion in which you should walk alone.

Estos días se hablará del caso de esta peregrina asaltada en su etapa de Finisterre a Santiago de Compostela pero no debemos pensar que sea algo habitual o que el peregrinaje esté siendo objeto de ataques a peregrinos. La seguridad de estas rutas se evidencia diariamente, hay vigilancia de la Guardia Civil, coches de Protección Civil circulando por las vías próximas a los caminos que controlan que no se produzcan accidentes y en el caso de darse alguno, son efectivos en sus servicios. De ello doy fe personalmente, cuando una peregrina con la que andaba se lesionó bajando de Rabanal del Camino a El Acebo y pudo ser recogida y llevada a la población más próxima para que recibiera atención médica por un vehículo de «Protección Civil» del Bierzo. Un servicio gratuito que suele recorrer a lo largo del día, varias veces, la carretera próxima al sendero habilitado para los peregrinos, según la Provincia por la que estés peregrinando.

These days we will talk about the case of this pilgrim assaulted in its stage from Finisterre to Santiago de Compostela but we should not think it is something usual or that the pilgrimage is being attacked by pilgrims. The safety of these routes is evident daily, there is surveillance of the Civil Guard, Civil Protection cars circulating along the roads next to the roads that control that accidents do not occur and in the case of any, are effective in their services. I personally testify to this when a pilgrim with whom I was walking got injured while going down from Rabanal del Camino to El Acebo and could be picked up and taken to the nearest town to receive medical attention by a «Civil Protection» vehicle from Bierzo. A free service that usually runs throughout the day, several times, the road next to the path enabled for pilgrims, depending on the Province for which you are making a pilgrimage.

En caso de peregrinar solos, salgáis de donde salgáis, simplemente, procurad no andar lejos de otros peregrinos que inician su andadura desde los albergues de la población de la que salís. En mi caso, suelo desayunar temprano y me quedo cerca del Hotel a la espera de ver pasar uno o varios peregrinos de camino a la salida de población y me incorporo tras ellos, para sentirme más segura y guiada.

In case of pilgrimage alone, leave where you leave, simply, try not to walk away from other pilgrims who start their journey from the shelters of the population from which you go. In my case, I usually have breakfast early and I stay close to the Hotel waiting to see one or more pilgrims on the way out of town and I join them, to feel more safe and guided

Confío que la Policía pueda esclarecer este hecho puntual y que esta peregrina agredida reciba la mejor atención posible y los culpables sean castigados. 

I trust that the Police can clarify this specific event and that this abused pilgrim receives the best possible attention and the guilty parties are punished.

Estas cosas no deberían pasar pero pasan, por lo tanto es mejor prevenir que curar. Evitar las situaciones de riesgo puede ser una fórmula, aunque a veces no esté en nuestras manos evitarlo.

These things should not happen but they happen, therefore it is better to prevent than to cure. Avoiding risk situations can be a formula, although sometimes it is not in our hands to avoid it.
